About the Event
FREE KIDS WORKSHOP
Ages 10 and upÂ
Zines are a powerful mode of self-expression that focus on storytelling. Memories are unfolded by each artist through the care for, and exploration of materials, and through abstract narratives. They tell stories and are extensions of ourselves, and can vary in subject matter and style. Similar to textile practices such as quilting and soft sculpture, where fragments of fabric are painstakingly assembled to create lasting and resilient forms of communication; the construction of zines are also piecemeal and laborious, and the hand of the maker is clear to its viewer. Through mixed-media processes, zine creators are in charge of the layout, content, and distribution of the zines they make.
The teaching artist will demonstrate how to create both a one-sheet zine, as well as a booklet zine, and each participant can choose which format they prefer. Zines are ways to tell and share stories, and can cultivate supportive environments for people with similar interests in art, music, poetry, comics, and more! The workshop will focus on the process of piecing together fragments made of different materials, including fabric and colorful papers to create dynamic compositions through creative and cathartic modes to recharge and connect with others in holistic ways.
