About the Event

Elm Foundation welcomes Nathan West as our first exhibiting artist for our 2022 season.

West’s photographic project, entitled “8 Ball”, combines a series of portraits and reportage photographs with artifacts from various bars and honky-tonks, transforming the Boiler’s interior space into an ersatz dive. The work explores the wild, vibrant, boozy world that is the bar billiards scene. In images collected over a five year period West captures moments of joy, abandon, determination, and nihilistic revelry with a cinematic feel. West’s work concerns itself with intimacy, the portraits and reportage imagery fluctuate from unguarded candids to considered portraiture, with West as both observer and participant. By incorporating the tactile and physical aspects of the environment explored in the piece, exemplified in a fully functional bar pool table, West playfully invites viewers to involve themselves in a version of that world, creating an immersive experience and by doing so extends and enriches the community.
